From Sheep to Sleep: Meet the Family Behind Our Wool

At Frankenmuth Woolen Mill, people often ask us where our wool comes from.

The answer isn't a warehouse or a commodity broker—it's families like the Jensens.

For us, quality begins long before a comforter, mattress topper, or pillow is handcrafted in our mill. It begins on working ranches with people who care deeply about their sheep, their land, and the quality of the wool they produce.

One of those families is the Jensen Ranch & Tomales Sheep Company in Tomales, California.

A Tradition That Spans Generations

The Jensen family has been raising sheep since 1856, making them one of California's long-standing ranching families. Today, the ranch is part of Fibershed's Climate Beneficial™ program, a movement focused on regenerative agriculture that helps improve soil health while supporting responsible wool production.

When we first began looking for wool sources that reflected our own values, we weren't simply searching for high-quality fiber. We wanted to know the people behind it.

We wanted to know how the sheep were cared for.

We wanted to know how the land was managed.

Most importantly, we wanted to build relationships—not just purchase wool.

That's exactly what we found with the Jensen family.

More Than Just Wool

Behind every fleece is a family.

There are generations working together, children learning the traditions of ranching, experienced shearers harvesting wool with incredible skill, and countless hours devoted to caring for both the sheep and the land.

These aren't staged marketing photos.

They're a glimpse into the real work that happens long before the wool ever reaches our mill in Frankenmuth, Michigan.

Why We Chose Climate Beneficial™ Wool

Not all wool is created equal.

The Climate Beneficial™ wool we source from the Jensen Ranch comes from sheep raised using regenerative land management practices that help improve the health of the soil over time.

Healthy soil stores more carbon, retains water more effectively, supports healthier grasslands, and ultimately benefits both livestock and the environment.

For us, this means we're able to offer bedding made from wool that's not only exceptionally comfortable, but also produced by people who are committed to caring for the land for future generations.

Once the wool leaves the ranch, its journey is just beginning.

The wool eventually makes its way to our mill in Frankenmuth, Michigan, where it is carefully transformed into the comforters, mattress toppers, and pillows that thousands of customers sleep under every night.

Our commitment from the wool to our finished products have not changed since we opened our doors in 1894.

Quality starts with exceptional raw materials.

No amount of craftsmanship can replace poor-quality wool.

That's why we're so selective about the families we work with.

A Partnership Built on Shared Values

At Frankenmuth Woolen Mill, we've always believed that relationships matter.

Whether it's our employees, our customers, or the ranching families who supply our wool, we value long-term partnerships built on trust, integrity, and a shared commitment to quality.

The Jensen family represents everything we look for in a wool supplier.

Their dedication to responsible ranching, animal care, and producing exceptional wool allows us to continue making products we're proud to put our name on.

Thank You

We'd like to extend our sincere thanks to Jim Jensen and everyone at Jensen Ranch & Tomales Sheep Company for sharing these wonderful photos and for the incredible care they put into producing the wool that becomes such an important part of our bedding.

Every comforter, mattress topper, and pillow we make begins with people like them.

And that's something we're incredibly proud to share with you.
