Why Percale?

Why Percale?

Every bedding product manufactured at the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill contains 100% climate beneficial wool and certified organic percale cotton. Countless benefits and years of research help answer the question “Why Wool?”. But, what about the question, “Why Percale?”.  Wool and percale go together like peas and carrots to create the perfect balance for all natural bedding, and the benefits are truly endless!

Organic percale cotton is one of the most breathable fabrics available on the market today, and it enhances the natural benefits already present in all of our wool. After we receive our raw wool from the farms, in the cleaning and processing of the wool we do not suffocate the fibers by using any chemicals or additives. The wool naturally has holes in the fibers that allow for both warm and cool air to pass through, hence the breathability in regulating body temperature while in use.

The percale cotton used at the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill has a thread count of 220, making it breathable, durable, and wrinkle-free. A thread count is described as how many threads of string can be counted in a square inch of any given material. In the manufacturing of our organic percale cotton itself, the fibers are woven 140 vertically and 80 horizontally, intertwined tightly with each individual piece to make a strong cotton material.  Too high of a thread count can often feel stiff, rough, and suffocating because of so much fabric being compacted together. We have found our 220 thread count to be the perfect sweet spot - or should we say, sleep spot?

The quality of cotton, much like the quality of wool, matters tremendously to us here at the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill. Both materials are American manufactured for the American people, because that’s who we are and that’s what we care about. Wool is naturally breathable, as is percale cotton, and by selecting this fabric to adorn all our wool bedding products, the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill is furthering their mission to provide the path to better sleep.
